Abstract
Mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening fungal infection that occurs in patients with immune deficiency conditions. Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis is a medical and surgical emergency that has been rarely reported in the pediatric age group. We report a case of Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis in an adolescent girl with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus, who presented in diabetic ketoacidosis with right orbital swelling. Ketoacidosis was corrected by the paediatric endocrine unit using normal saline, insulin and potassium. She was also placed on antibiotics and amphotericin B. She eventually had endoscopic sinus surgery by otorhinolaryngologist, and exenteration of the right eye by the ophthalmologist at the same theatre session. Patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital. There should be a high index of suspicion for Mucormycosis in a diabetic patient presenting with orbital swelling.
