Abstract

Background:  The surgical treatment of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), was uncommon in our institution until recently.

Aim and Objectives: This study aimed to identify the incidence and postoperative morbidity and mortality following PDA ligation in our institution.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of all patients who had PDA ligation between January 2009 to July 2016 was undertaken. The information was obtained from the in-patient hospital records and the theatre operation register. Only patients whose hospital records could be accessed were included in the study.

Results: A total of 21 patients were operated on during this period. Of the 16 patients whose hospital records could be accessed, 15 were females (M: F=1:15). The mean age was 25.3 months with a range of 86 months (10-96). The mean postoperative hospital stay was 9.8 days and a range of 7-18 days. The complication rate was 56.3% with 50% of the patients having pyrexia. The mean follow-up was 16.2 months with a range of 0-60 months. Two mortalities were recorded in the immediate post-operative period; a third mortality was recorded in the course of follow-up following a pediatric surgical procedure 3months after PDA ligation.

Conclusion: There is a relatively high incidence of postoperative fever. Therefore, efforts must be made to identify and manage the predispositions to this morbidity.
